Every year, I look forward to February for so many reasons. First, it’s my birth month. Next, it’s Black History month where Black American history is researched, discussed, and challenged. Then, there is Valentine’s Day, the Super Bowl of love celebration.
Every month around this time, I like to share something about me or a book I’m writing. Since genealogy is my favorite pastime, I thought it would be a perfect conversation piece, but it’s Valentine’s Day, how about I mix the two: Black Love.
Honestly, I don’t know how our ancestors were able to find love under the constant threat of separation or humiliation, yet love endured. I found evidence of this with my third-great grandparents, Ned and Priscilla Brownlee, born in 1800 and 1801, respectively. When their first enslaver died, he divided them between his two sons. However, once slavery had ended, they were reunited and it appears with all their children too.
My ancestors’ strength and perseverance are the backdrop for my Jamieson Legacy series where I write about strong Black men who are committed to their wives and families. They know their worth, and the Word of God that they apply to their lives.
Readers always comment they want a Jamieson man. Well, he’s out there, searching for the one woman who will snag his heart.
