When the Black Lives Matter movement began to dominate the headlines, I saw an image I would never forget. There was a photo of an armed police officer, or military personnel with his gun—more like an AK-47—pointing at a shirtless black male who was on the ground.
What was different about this photo was the mother who tangled with the officer to keep him from shooting her son. I can only imagine what was going through her mind, “Not today, not my son. His life matters to me….” She was willing to either die for her son, so his life would be spared, or they would die together. That was a dangerous move, but her son’s life was worth the risk. Nothing like a mother’s love. I don’t know how the story ended, but I would hope her actions saved a life that day. All lives matter, regardless of skin color, because every human being was created in the Lord God’s image.
Jesus Christ risked His life to step in to save us from a sure spiritual death. I can’t imagine living in eternal everlasting torment. My mind can’t conceive a deposit for lost souls. It must be so horrible that Christ to step in to save us from it.
As I reflect and even celebrate His death and resurrection this weekend, I’m thankful that I’m special enough for God Himself to step into flesh. He called Himself Jesus, then set off for His mission to suffer for us. The kicker is He was rejected by the people He came to rescue. Rejection is a devastating thing, yet instead of returning to His throne, he dragged His own cross to be nailed on it. We are really a BIG deal for Him to die for us and not the angels who were disobeyed him. What makes us so special? John 3:16. He loved us.
